Husband & Wife Duo Megan and Jake Earn Their Online MBAs from LSUS

As new parents balancing full-time work, family life, and school, Megan and Jake Murphy leaned on each other to pursue their MBAs from LSU Shreveport. With Megan pursuing her MBA with a concentration in Finance and Jake focusing on Project Management, both found unique ways to apply what they learned while motivating one another to push through challenges. Meet Megan and Jake 

What inspired each of you to pursue your respective MBAs from LSUS? 
I have always wanted to increase my education and pursue a career that benefits me and my family. Finally getting the opportunity to commit to working on my MBA was purely based on it being the right time in my life and us having the financial stability to afford it. Both Jake and I were looking for more out of our careers, so we decided to take the jump and get our MBAs. 

What was it like pursuing your degrees online together? 
It is awesome, and like having a built-in study partner. Even though we pursued different concentrations, we were able to take the general MBA courses together. It was also motivating. There were moments of stress and tireless effort being spent as we took each course. But having someone in the same household to bounce ideas, critical thinking conversations, and study techniques off of was helpful. 

How did you support each other during challenging moments? 
During moments of struggle, we had to push each other to do our best. At times, Jake reminded me why I chose to pursue my MBA and encouraged me to focus on that to get through the tough times. As new parents as well, it was constantly a challenge on who would watch our child for a few hours to allow the other to take time for class work or studying. Those moments were brutal due to having to find the perfect balance between school life and parent life that worked for us. 

How did the flexibility of LSU Online help you achieve your goals as a married couple? 
We are incredibly grateful for the online self-paced program. It gave us the flexibility to choose what time of day worked best for us around our workdays and parenting nights. We’d 100% recommend the accelerated online program to anyone who is passionate about getting their MBA. 

What advice would you give to other couples considering pursuing online degrees together? 
For those who are interested in completing an MBA program together, GEAUX FOR IT! Having your companion or partner there with you to understand the time commitments, course work load, and dedication that it takes to complete your online degree is motivating, inspiring, and rewarding. Sit down, make an action plan, and reap the benefits of doing the program together. 

What are your future goals now that you’ve both graduated? 
Future Goal: rest and relaxation. Now that we have both completed our MBAs, we will enjoy our time together and being parents. We both will continue to climb the career ladder and pursue management level positions within our companies. 

What was your favorite part of your journey?  
Our favorite part was making the choice to pursue our MBAs. That moment was extremely exciting because we could foresee all of the possibilities and opportunities. Once we began, this choice reminded us that no matter what obstacles come our way, we will face them head on together.
